Groovember 2019 by Albert Hwang

#Groovember was a project started in 2019 by dancer and interaction designer Albert Hwang to get his creative juices flowing, and to explore new forms of movement expression and professional development practices. Inspired by the Inktober social media event (where individuals across the world are encouraged to create and share a sketch they made based on a daily prompt created by Inktober organizers), Albert posted a short video of himself dancing each day for the entire month of November, 2019. Each performance was inspired by a randomly-generated word prompt assigned to a specific day.

We are excited to collaborate with Albert Hwang with Groovember 2020 because the project embodies the potential of technology to spur new forms of embodied expression and creative inquiry, even as it can be used as a tool resist the commodification of human expression. Groovember has conceptual ties to SEADS member Diego Maranan's project, OpenSourceDance.org (2006-2007), which was both a Web platform and a proposed framework for sharing choreography intended to foster community and sharing among choreographers. OpenSourceDance.org recognized how movement and choreography can be regarded as data resulting from a creative process and as could be subject to intellectual property laws; as such, choreography could be licensed through a Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licensing allows creators to enable reuse and remix of their work by other artists while protecting ownership over their creations. The OpenSourceDance.org website (which has since then been taken down) enabled dance artists to register their Creative Commons-licensed choreography. Like OpenSourceDance.org, Groovember provides a technology-assisted framework by which dancers can take inspiration from different sources in order to develop their creative and professional practice.

SEADS is working with Albert Hwang by organizing the Groovember 2020 submissions on the SEADS platform, and by reaching out to the SEADS network to help build the community of Groovember participants.
